Issue Overview:
Students at UC Law have been experiencing intermittent problems connecting their Chromebooks to the internet via the "UCLawSFGuest" network. This network uses a Captive Portal splash page that students must ACCEPT to access the internet onsite. However, students often get stuck with a blank page on the "gstatic..." URL, preventing them from logging into their Chromebooks or accessing their Gmail. This issue occurs randomly each Saturday Academy and can happen anywhere on campus.
Steps to Resolve the Issue:
-
Check Wi-Fi Connection:
- Ensure that the Chromebook is connected to the "UCLawSFGuest" network. To verify, click on the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom right of your screen.
- If you see an exclamation mark (!) next to the Wi-Fi icon, it indicates a possible Captive Portal issue.
-
Switch to UCLawSFPlay Network:
- Open the Network settings and look for the "UCLawSFPlay" network.
- Connect to "UCLawSFPlay" and wait for the Captive Portal splash page to appear. A login screen will be displayed asking for credentials.
- Important: Do not enter any credentials. Simply close the login prompt.
- Note: If you don’t see "UCLawSFPlay" in the available networks, you may need to move around in the building to find a better signal for this specific network.
-
Reconnect to UCLawSFGuest:
- After closing the "UCLawSFPlay" login prompt, reconnect to the "UCLawSFGuest" network.
- The Captive Portal should now display the "Connect to the Internet" prompt correctly instead of a blank page.
-
Issue Resolved:
- This process should fix the connection issue for the remainder of the day. However, be aware that the problem may reoccur the following Saturday.
